Make sure the Army can move and defend Australia in this varied combat role. Wherever they're required to be, whatever the conditions are, and no matter the challenges, in the role, you'll get to experience what it's like.

As a Gap Year Combat Engineer, you'll learn all about being a soldier who specialises in military field engineering. You'll gain skills in bridge-building, minefield clearance, field defence construction and demolition, as well as building, road and airfield construction and repair. You'll learn a great deal and gain experiences, all while enjoying a varied and rewarding 12-month taste of Army life.

Your role involves being part of the Royal Australian Engineers (RAE) Corps, and as a RAE soldier you'll be known as a 'Sapper', a term well known and respected in the Army. You and other Sappers will be responsible for keeping the ADF on the move, whilst also denying mobility to the enemy.

When it comes to being rewarded for your efforts, you'll receive an attractive salary during your Gap Year and benefit from standard ADF employment entitlements, including a uniform and service allowance. During your 12 month role and on completion of training, you will receive a salary package starting from $69,998 plus generous superannuation.

Your time as a Gap Year Combat Engineer starts with completion of the Recruitment Course over 13 weeks at Kapooka, Wagga Wagga, NSW. During those 13 weeks, you'll take part in physical training, weapon handling and shooting, first aid, drill and field craft. Training that's deliberately challenging and designed to prepare you as a soldier in today's Army. Once this basic training is finished, you'll then undertake a Basic Combat Engineers Course over 12 weeks at the School of Military Engineering at Holsworthy, Sydney, NSW.

At the end of your Gap Year Combat Engineer program, you can choose to continue your career in the Army, or use the skills and experiences you've gained to give you a unique edge on your next career path. There's no obligation to serve beyond the one-year program period.
