<p>Most Specialist Medical Officers are generally posted to a Health Battalion located in all capital cities.. Some limited opportunities exist for postings within Joint Health Command health units or HQ providing technical and specialist advice. Depending on rank and experience, due to geographical location there is scope for travel to be approved, in order to allow specialist from regional areas to travel to capital cities.</p>

You will be paid to train and on completion of your Initial Military Training and Initial Employment Training, you’ll earn a tax-free daily rate of at least:

<p>Facio-Maxillary Surgeons are employed as Medical Procedural Specialists (MPS) Medical Officers (MO) within Army.</p>
<p>A Facio-Maxillary Surgeon is an Army Reserve (Ares) Specialist Service Officer (SSO) within the Royal Australian Army Medical Corps (RAAMC) who use their medical expertise and knowledge to ensure appropriate clinical care is administered to patients in a garrison or field environment. As Registered health professionals employed in clinical duties, they are, by definition, non-combatants.</p>
<p>The Facio-Maxillary Surgeon is integral to the continuum of health care provided to ADF members. They are part of the health care team and are required to provide medical care to the highest standards in order to aid in the prevention, treatment or recovery of injuries or disease within the limits of their scope of practice and training.</p>
<p>An Facio-Maxillary Surgeon must be a qualified specialist.</p>
<div class="h4">Working conditions.</div>
<p>Facio-Maxillary Surgeons will perform their duties in a broad spectrum of environments and there is a requirement that they adapt to a range of workplace conditions and perform their duties wherever and whenever a casualty/patient situation exists or, wherever and whenever the provision of health care is warranted:</p>
<ul>
    <li><strong>Normal working conditions</strong>. Under normal working conditions, the Facio-Maxillary Surgeon will perform their duties in climate controlled purpose built health facilities. Normal working conditions include those encountered on operations, training exercises and in barracks. The duration of a normal working day will vary but will generally range between six to twelve hours in duration and may involve short/no notice tasking.</li>
    <li><strong>Other working conditions</strong>. There is an expectation that the Facio-Maxillary Surgeon operates under the same working conditions and with the same privations, as the organisation that they are allocated to support.</li>

<div class="h4">Most demanding employment conditions and hazards</div>
<p> The most demanding job conditions and hazards that a Facio-Maxillary Surgeon may be exposed to could include extended emergency care, independent of supervision and remote from a higher level health support, in an austere environment, to a trauma casualty with limited stores and equipment.</p>
<div class="h4">Social environment.</div>
<p>The Facio-Maxillary Surgeon may work as a member of a small specialist medical team or as an individual. Facio-Maxillary Surgeons, through their professional and legislated responsibilities, are normally the clinical leaders of multi-disciplinary health teams, irrespective of the rank of other members. Consequently, they must have high order social and interpersonal skills, leading through evident professional mastery and a broad understanding of roles, responsibilities and skills of the health team. They have constant personal contact with patients and other medical specialists and are required to maintain confidentiality while being tactful and compassionate. They must be able to communicate effectively in a professional manner both verbally and in writing to maintain effective relationships with superiors and subordinates, including civilian and international force elements with diverse cultural and political backgrounds as part of a coalition force.</p>

The Australian Army’s Facio-Maxillary Surgeons are Medical Procedural Specialist officers in the Royal Australian Army Medical Corps who actively practice their higher level skills in civilian practice, field hospitals and on operations.
