Medical Scientists (Pathologists)&nbsp;are integral components of the Royal Australian Army Medical Corps (RAAMC) and are responsible for aiding medical practitioners in the diagnosis, monitoring and prevention of disease through the analysis of biological specimens. They are responsible for the provision of pathology services in deployed and non-deployed pathology environments. This includes the management of laboratories to conduct routine biochemical, microbiological, haematological and blood transfusion testing of clinical pathology specimens. As an Army Medical Scientist you are likely to serve within one of Army's deployable Health Battalion based in Adelaide, Brisbane, Darwin and Townsville. 
Army also provides selected Medical Scientists to the Royal Australian Navy Landing Heavy Dock (LHD) ship capabilities. Army Officers selected for these appointments would serve based out of Sydney (Garden Island). Medical Scientists selected for this type of appointment are experienced radiographers who normally have served time in Brisbane and gained experience and additional skills. Members posted to RAN capabilities may expect to be at sea for extended periods of time supporting exercises, regional activities and potential operational deployments.
Research Scientists are also integral components of RAAMC and are responsible for performing research at the Joint Health Command unit - the Australian Army Malaria Institute (AMI). This world class facility provides research aimed at regional health threats and countermeasures and seeks to ensure that Australian Defence Force personnel have the best protection against malaria and other vector borne diseases. AMI's strategic focus is on the evaluation of new drugs, vaccines a personal protective measures as well as the provision of technical advice, risk assessment and management of disease outbreak of military importance. Scientists serving within this unit often are highly trained professionals who maintain or are working on research, PhD qualifications and maintain professional academic engagement activities.
Reserves may be employed as either Medical Scientists in the Army pathology laboratories or as Research Scientists at the AMI. They can perform similar roles to their full time colleagues, including undertaking overseas deployments.
