<p>The Naval Reserve Public Relations Branch is coordinated by the Director of Communication and Media - Navy, in Canberra, and welcomes applications from across Australia. Successful applicants will be expected to travel interstate for both training and career development opportunities as well as supporting Public Affairs tasks on ships and ashore.</p>

You will be paid to train and on completion of your Initial Military Training and Initial Employment Training, you’ll earn a tax-free daily rate of at least:

<div class="p" >The role of a <strong>Media and Communications Officer</strong> (known in the Navy as a Public Relations Officer) is to plan and coordinate activities to&nbsp;generate an information effect to regional, domestic and internal audiences. It includes the use of traditional and social media to promote and protect the reputation of the Royal Australian Navy and Australian Defence Force.</div>

<p>The Navy uses Reserve Officers with specialist communication skills to fill and supplement its full-time public affairs capability. Reserve Media and Communications Officers are expected to provide a broad range of public affairs functions for both Navy and Defence. Navy has recently expanded public relations roles into the full time ranks, but currently this is via internal transfer only.</p>

<p>Navy Reserve Media and Communications Officers serve at sea and ashore in exercises and maritime operations to profile naval activities or deploy into Joint Public Affairs roles. They use written communication and media liaison skills to provide strategic and operational communications advice to Commanding Officers and senior managers to assist with the handling of topical issues. Media and Communications Officers may be required to assist with promotion and media coverage of events to enhance Defence image and reputation.</p>

<p>With further experience, Media and Communications Officers contribute to the development and implementation of military public affairs plans. Experienced officers can expect to deploy in the joint operations environment and to lead, direct and manage both Imagery Specialist Sailors and Australian Public Servants to achieve information effects.</p>

<div class="h4">Required Skills</div>

<p>To perform these tasks Media and Communications Officers will need to demonstrate current knowledge, skills and experience in the following communication fields:</p>

    <li> Crisis and issues management </li>
    <li>Media event coordination</li>
    <li>Journalism, writing, editing and publishing</li>
    <li>Corporate communications (external preferred) </li>
    <li>Government and community relations</li>
    <li>Social media and</li>
    <li>Communication research and evaluation</li>
</ul>
<p>Media and Communications Officer candidates will also need to display the following:</p>
<ul>
    <li>Highly developed written and verbal communication skills</li>
    <li>A sound understanding of media dynamics</li>
    <li>Confidence in dealing with the media and senior officers</li>
    <li>An ability to work well in a crisis and</li>
    <li>A broad understanding of the Navy</li>
</ul>

    <li>Do you meet the minimum officer entry requirements into the Australian Defence Force? </li>
    <li>Do you meet the specialised education entry requirements for the Public Relations Branch? </li>
    <li>Are you willing to commit to a minimum of 20 days Navy Reserve service annually to facilitate baseline training and employment? </li>
    <li>Are you aware that full-time public relations roles in the Navy are available? </li>
    <li>Are you prepared to deploy nationally and internationally at sea and ashore? </li>
    <li>Are you willing to serve in an operational joint environment with other Services? </li>
    <li>Do you experience in the management of public affairs issues? </li>
    <li>Have you written and published articles, newsletters, reports and publications? </li>
    <li>Are you a social media practitioner? </li>
    <li>Do you experience with the media? </li>
    <li>Have you developed public relations plans or programs? </li>
</ul>
