Gap Year Artillery soldiers will conduct their recruit course at Kapooka, NSW before moving to conduct training at Puckapunyal, VIC. Once trained as an Artillery Operator or Artillery Systems Operator you can be employed within most Army units across Australia, primary locations include Brisbane, Darwin, Townsville and Adelaide.

In the Army you'll get paid a good salary from day one regardless of your age, experience or qualifications; and your pay increases as you progress through training. In addition to your salary you'll receive a variety of allowances, extra pay for relevant qualifications – plus 16.4% superannuation, a far higher rate than you're likely to find in the civilian world.

Immerse yourself in this action-packed experience and gain skills for life while on an Army Artillery Gap Year. Learn to be part of the team that sets up, aims and fires some of the Army’s most powerful weapons in a role full of camaraderie and ongoing opportunities.
 
From the moment you start your experience, you’ll be trained as part of a highly skilled team to handle any situation. You will challenge yourself and learn to operate effectively in a range of different environments as you contribute to the protection of Australia. 

You will be supported throughout your training by professional and dedicated Army personnel who will provide the guidance necessary for you to get the most out of this experience.
 
Your training will begin at Kapooka in Wagga Wagga, NSW, where you’ll complete 9 weeks of recruit training. Training will involve physical training, weapon handling and shooting, first aid, drill and field craft. It’s challenging, but it will prepare you for anything.
Once you complete your Initial Military Training, you’ll grow your skills and expertise in one of the following roles:
 
Artillery Observer – Be the eyes and the ears of the battlefield. Use high-tech equipment to locate enemy targets and gather battlespace intelligence.
Artillery Operator - This is a hands-on, physically active combat role where you’ll harness your agility and ability to work quickly and be part of the team that sets up, aims and fires one of the Army’s most powerful weapons.
Artillery Systems Operator – Use advanced surveillance equipment, to understand the battlefield, identify targets and produce & communicate firing solutions for artillery and other available firepower.
Air Defence Operator – Use sophisticated radar systems to identify and analyse potential threats, then employ surface-to-air missile systems to destroy them, in this team-oriented combat role.
So, what happens next? After finishing your Gap Year program, you can choose to continue your career in the Army or use the skills and experiences to gain an edge in future careers. There’s no obligation to serve beyond the one-year program period.
